okay i think “sixpenceeee’s family owns an eight-year-old child slave” just superseded the leelah project scam as the most flagrantly immoral and surreal thing to ever happen on this website

i’ve blocked something like twenty people for defending child slavery on this post which is not… something i ever thought i would have to type.

here’s an additional post from sixpenceee in which they defend their family’s slave ownership:

I talked to the girl that worked in my uncle’s house. Her name was Priya, and she was the sweetest little thing. When I asked her how she felt about working at my uncle’s house, she was (to my surprise) very ecstatic about it. She enjoyed working there, as she had enough to eat everyday, and enjoyed pleasures such as AC, indoor plumbing and much more.
She said it beats working in a factory where many children are injured daily and work in poor conditions.
If you’re wondering about education and why isn’t she in school, after grade 5, education isn’t free anymore. It costs a lost of money and many families don’t have that.

i… don’t know why this is even a question in 2017 in the age of the internet and libraries but i feel it’s really important to say that there is no such thing as a “happy slave”; something Frederick Douglass rebuked in 1847. here’s a link to an online version of his book. no matter how “good” a slaveowner is, taking away a person’s freedom is inherently violent, and i’m not sure why this is a question.

living in a country where human trafficking is “the norm” does not excuse slavery, that’s why countries have entire wars to demolish it as an institution. cultural norms never excuse injustice, else essentially all bigotry would be excused. there is no such thing as a “happy slave.” to quote burke, “If you have made a contented slave, you have made a degraded man.”

To describe child slavery like it's the norm here is incorrect and morally horrifying. On the topic of sixpenceee’s family having a slave – when I was a kid my grandfather and I went to visit distant relatives in a rich town in Uzbekistan where many had slaves. These distant family members had several slaves. It was pretty disgusting to see, because even though these family members treated their slaves “well”, you could tell they would much rather, obviously, not be slaves. I remember asking one of the kitchen workers if they enjoyed slavery, and she told me that she did, because it was better than alternatives. Exactly what Sixpenceee’s family’s slave apparently said. When we left, my grandfather (who is from Uzbekistan, and very against the slavery) told me that though it is considered better than some alternatives to the general populace, it’s still a miserable existence. No slave is really happy- you’re a slave, you don’t have any freedom and you literally belong to someone. You’re separated from your family, and even though you’re TECHNICALLY given the opportunity to leave, you aren’t really able to at all. I don’t know if Sixpenceee is lying to herself or what, but from the point of view of someone who met slaves who worked for his own family members, they are not ‘enthusastic’ or ‘happy’. If you’re asked, you have to say you enjoy it. Your wellbeing depends on your owners, and if you say that no, you hate being a slave, you’re paid less than minimum wage for working 24/7, you’ll be punished. It makes me angry for her to, basically, defend her family having a slave (ooh she’s a child, she’s happy, at least she isn’t dead lololol) and then turn around and talk about how the topic of slavery and trafficking is very near and dear to her heart or whatever. .44% of the population of Bangladesh is in slavery, 3.97% in Uzbekistan, where my family is from, but that doesn’t mean it’s normal there. At the very least, I don’t want her to be saying that “oh it’s normal here so it’s okay”.

As someone from Bangladesh, I can say that her family could have more than afforded to send those children to school. School in Bangladesh is only expensive relative to the poor people. Her family makes more than enough to probably send all those kids to school. She is lying

Child labour is inhumane. An 8 year old should be out playing and having fun and not slaving away to make money for his family. Care enough about the 8 year old working for you? Give his family money, support them, and don’t hire him or any child to do child labour.

I came to this country for a vacation to visit my family and I am witnessing these acts. I do NOT condone child labor. I did NOT hire this child to work for me. ME, personally? I didn’t do THIS.

But my uncle? Other families? YES, they have been hiring these children, because HERE in Bangladesh that is a popular practice.

Now, ofcourse it isn’t RIGHT. Ofcourse I am against it. Ofcourse, I am documenting everything to bring some justice.
